James Newton Howard & Friends is a highly acclaimed audiophile instrumental album released in 1983 by the independent label Sheffield Lab. Recorded using the Direct-to-Disc method, this album is famous for its impeccable production quality and is frequently used to test the dynamic range of high-fidelity audio systems. The project features composer James Newton Howard collaborating with Toto’s David Paich (keyboards), Steve Porcaro (keyboards), Jeff Porcaro (drums) as well as father Joe Porcaro (percussion). The three keyboardists utilized nine Yamaha synthesizers, prominently featuring the brand-new, cutting-edge DX-7 models of the era.
